Vengaya sambar is a tamil cuisine which is very famous dish in TamilNadu it is also known as shallot sambar,onions sambar it is very tasty and also very easy to prepare the main ingredient is toor dal and onions it is a good accompaniment with rice it is not so spice because we add sugar or jaggery to balance taste so kids also will have this as their favourite dish

Toor dal - 1 cup
onions - 5 
tamarind - 30 grms
salt to taste
oil - 3 tsp
turmeric pinch
curry leaves few
shredded coconut - 1/2
red chiles for tempering
coriander leaves
ginger garlic paste
mustard seeds
cumin seeds for tempering
sugar or jaggery to balance taste
sambar powder

1.First heat a vessel add oil,mustard,cumin seeds,shallots and cook well for two minutes
2.Then add curry leaves,turmeric,red chilies,tomatoes,ginger garlic paste and saute well 
3. Now add salt,sambar powder,sugar,grated coconut and tamarind juice
4.After adding tamarind juice close lid and let it boil
5.When your tamarind juice is boiling add toor dal which is already cooked
6.Add water according to the consistency and garnish with coriander leaves,shredded coconut 
7.Serve hot with rice
